Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

I have rang the esa Numbers multiple times and each time been on hold over 1 hour today on home for over 1hr 20 mins still no answer: when I did get an answer last time I was told a pack of lies: I found this out after attending my local job centre who looked at my esa claim. Still to date no success to speak to anyone this has been going on now over almost 3 months.

Tuesday 11th April.. I dial the DWP PIP number, only to be constantly cut off around the 5 minutes wait, after pressing this number, that number.. the automated voice says please stay in the line, one of our operatives will be with you shortly, then all I get is "call ended" , I go through this time and time again!! I had a reminder letter to say back in (13th) March we sent you a PIP form to fill in, my form came by mail last week of March, I filled it in, but had to get GP documentation as my proof of medical problems, which was ballsed about, cost me £26.00 too.. I posted my PIP form back on the 6th April 2023, because DWP wanted it back by the 13th April 2023.. now this reminder dated 1st April drops on my mat, therefore this morning/afternoon I try phoning to let them know it's been in the post from the 6th.. it worries me they haven't acknowledged they've received it yet, and we've had easter holidays.. the mail delivery systems diabolical too, nothing seems to be delivered on time.. I was told by DWP if the forms not back by the 13th, PIP will stop! If that happens, my direct debits will be screwed up!! I'd best stop rambling now.. the number I phoned DWP on was 0800 121 4433..

We have tried to contact the PIP enquiry line again this morning but the line simply keeps shutting the call down after varying amounts of time waiting. The initial letter came 20 days after the date on their communication. Things aren't good at the DWP.

Yesterday on total 5 hours holding talked to someone for 5min to be passed back and forth now 5 and all offices closed so call canceled
Today on hold 1.40 to be answered with I'll pass you on to some one who can help then cuts me off how do they expect anyone to get a job when you sit on the phone for hours every day and get nowhere

Record 3 hours 40 mins on hold   . To get told I will be sent a form in post.  I have a brain injury . I held onto that phone waiting because I could not focus on anything else due to executive dysfunction. I recorded the call for memory impairment. So not all in my head. I was left feeling disregulated . So upset. Surely this cannot be good for your mental health?
