Hi Dave,

The problem (as often) with the press is only half a story.

The situation being that in order to qualify for WPMS, since I think about 1982, one must first qualify for a War Pension of at least 40%, and at least 40% must be mobility related so for example an award of 30% mobility related and 10% other related for example PTSD) would not qualify for WPMS. Hence the advice to War Pensioners, particularly those without a 40% mobility award, was/is to claim DLA Mobility as they are/were ineligible to claim WPMS.

As the largest numbers (and percentage wise) of War Pensioners are at the 20% and 30% levels, obviously more would claim DLA tham WPMS.

I am on 60% plus unemply comforts and other bits legion and rafa and WP all said DLA was better at the timee even allowing for extra on WP mob

Hi Dave,

As I intimated above, it can be all about how the total percentage is constructed. I know of one chap on 80% War Pension but only of which 30% directly mobility related (hence no WPMS award) so total percentages are something of a misnomer with WPMS.

It could have been in your case DLA or WPMS may have been the easiest (or even only) mobility allowance you could claim. Each case has to be looked at on its own merits. Also over time things change, such as DLA 'life' awards being changed to 'Indefinite' awards. A subtle difference but a big change.

Of course sadly for those injured since 2005 and come under AFCS they are 'stuck' with only the civilian benefits - (No WPMS/UNSUPP etc).

I went for WPMS and was awarded it for life way back in the 90's I also opted for for WP Unemployability benefit instead of the DSS Invalidity/Incapacity Benefit. The right choice for me. Although I will have a complicated question later on.

when in the 90s as you might still have been able to get some IB with unsupp :) 5% of WP get unsupp and just under half still get some IB
