dla medical evidence was created by debbie
Hi I am new to this site so please bear with me. My husband has had ongoing back problems for years. Basically his disc fragmented and his sciatic nerve is permanately damaged. Despite an operation and an epidural the problem is still there and he gets varying degrees of pain on a daily basis. He still works and sometimes its such a struggle but he doesnt get sick pay. He was awarded high rate care and mobility for 2 years in 2007 during which time he had the unsuccessful operation. Upon renewal in 2009 he was turned down but after reconsidering they awarded low rate care because he failed the cooking test, his was awarded another 2 years. The last report from a GP was inaccurate because he only seen him once and had no idea of how it affects him on a daily basis, pain clinic has told him that they never send stuff to the DWP and we have been told that its almost impossible for the DWP to get anything from the consultant. His medical notes acknowledge his condition, his normal GP is fully aware of the problem, he recently had a home visit from the GP because he was completly unable to move and now has to have another MRI scan because they think a disc further up is now playing up. We are concerned that the decision maker will have insubstantial evidence again and be turned down. How can we overcome this problem. Can we explain this dilemma on the renewal form?

Hi Debbie

You say that there is a gp that know's your husband best. Put his name down as well as the pain clinic and consultant. Explain in the additional information section that consultant and pain clinic are not usually willing to help and suggest they contact your husband's gp. Also would your husband gp be willing to put some information in with the dla form.

Hope this helps.

Hi Debbie

I attend a pain clinic and every time I attend an appointment I receive a letter that the consultant is writing to my doctor updating him on my case. From the sound of things your pain clinic isn't doing this and if they are they aren't including you in the loop?

These letters were invaluable to me when I was applying and re applying for my DLA. If the pain clinic are writing to your GP you can ask for copies of the letters and include them as evidence.

I'm not sure if I am right saying this but surely there must be some sort of correspondence between the Pain Clinic and your Doctor otherwise how can your doctor know what they are advising, treating, changing medications etc?

Hope this helps.....Heather

Thanks you for your help. I have just spoke to the GP and they have alot of correspondance from the pain clinic on my husbands file which we were unaware of. I can now get copies which I can attach to the renewal form. Pain clinic have not been that helpful they even prescribed him drugs that aggravated his epilepsy! Your advice was very much appreciated :)
