If it still works like it did 7 years ago, all work by volunteers is checked by a paid worker. Someone may have read the case note by the person you dealt with originally, and decided that the initial response to your enquiry was wrong, following up by ringing you.
In my experience volunteers and workers are from all backgrounds, many are in receipt of sickness benefits themselves, and the focus is always on supporting the client, whatever the circumstances.
It certainly used to be the case that tribunal work was carried out by a specialist, highly trained, paid worker. (I was one for a bit, in the late 1990's)
If I fail my forthcoming ESA medical (mental health problems), I shall definitely be seeking help from the CAB.
Hope this helps

Hi Pikelet, thankyou for the reply.
After quite a long session with a volunteer, the notes were shown to her boss, and she was the one who decided they couldn't help me, that's why I was shocked by the call today.
Best of luck with your claim.
Rachel

Possibly, session supervisor got it wrong, this was picked up on case note review. This is, in a way, quite reassuring.
If you want, you can ask to read your case notes.
