Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

This so-called servcefrom PIP enquiry line is nothing short of a disgrace- spent obout five hours in call time this week trying to speak to anyone!! It’s no wonder people
Just give up on their reconsiderations/ appeals ! But hey that’s what thegovt want- to get vulnerable / disabled
people so hacked off that they just give in! If you’re new to this process - don’t give in ! That’s exactly what they want!

I have been calling dwp trying to get through to change my address for 2.5weeks. The call count is now up to 57, haven’t managed to get through as after 30/40 plus waiting time the line ALWAYS cuts off. Absolutely absurd

I just moved address from emergency housing to a council house. 3 years later instead of 3months I have a place. Change of address for Esa and PiP, phoned esa first - 1hr of automated response and music to be cut off! Rang back and took 75mins to answer and 15mins to change address. Esa is linked on the system with Pip, so they could and do tell Pip that you have moved, but you have to call them still??? 65mins of same music and 5min to change address. They make work that doesn’t even need to be done. But hey at least we have a social security system

Absolutely rubbish, refused to wait hours to speak to someone, not even an email to contact them. Frustrating, annoying disgusting service.

0800 169 0310 - Been trying to get appointeeship sorted for nearly 3 months, every time I call minimum of about an hour queue only to get nowhere. They can't be bothered to check if i'm a fit and proper person to act as his appointee but apparently I'm good enough to financially support him in the interim whilst his benefits remain frozen. Soul destroying.

Been waiting for 1 hour and 15 mins only to be then told that phone lines are temporarily closed. Only needed to ask for an extention in filling in review form as they sent it on 18th November and I have received it 7th December, they want it back by 15th December. What a joke, they do not give you a waiting time and now I will have to wait again tomorrow

First 4 times they hung up.
5th time, after 30mins of listening to soul-destroying music with no system to tell you where you are in the queue, a call-handler pretended that he could not hear me and finally hung up.

I have been on hold for over an hour, my phone battery died so had to hang up, every time I have to phone I have to wait, but this was the longest ever. I am an appointee for my disabled son and have to phone to sort out benefits. I wish there was an email. I’ve tried writing letters but they never respond to these. I will now have to try again Monday
