Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

The system is an absolute fkn joke!!!!! I spent the entire morning on hold yesterday when all I wanted to do was inform ESA I've changed my address. I was in the call queue for 1hr 15 mins until they so very kindly cut me off... the next couple of times I tried calling I couldn't even connect. At this very moment I've been waiting 44 minutes in a call queue and I'm not impressed. I'm a disabled person who also suffers with mental health issues and this additional stress is just not on. This needs sorting pronto!!

How the hell are people supposed to sort anything out or even inform dwp of any changes if they cant get hold of no one on the phone. To dwp. You probably wont even see this but what do you suggest people do? Even when right still get blanked. This is a terrible broken system where people cant speak to no one or get any help. Yet if not informed you threaten them with court action. Apart from jumping through burning hoops what do you suggest?

I've been trying to call PIP telephone number. I am very poorly and need a little more time to return my Review form. Letter says Ring Us if more time needed. JOKE? Every route I take through the automated answer machine eventually cuts me off. This is so distressing - they might stop my payments 😞 This is disgraceful

Anyone know what time the esa 0800 169 0310 number closes at?
Some website say 5 but for other esa numbers it’s 6 so I’m holding on. Currently at 1hr 45 mins. Do they cut you off if the offices close?

The whole system is completely shocking.
Between the Job Centre, UC, PIP & ESA (And indeed CHDA) which are all DWP departments non of the systems interconnect, non of them can communicate with one another; and indeed if you are not in a queue waiting you are running an investigation to work out what department has your form, what you your status is and who is doing what.

Picking on Bromley Councillors - I contacted 5 of them, and not one of them made an attempt to assist. Indeed they fobbed it off with "that is someone else's department".

Instead of plugging so much money into reforming the system and process, get them all on the same IT system for goodness sake and get some peeps to man the phones.
I would take a job in a heart beat at DWP as clearly you get paid there for doing completely BUGGER ALL. As I highly disabled person - I can easily do that from home and behind a computer.

ESA - Been unable to get through to them for 8 months.
    - the system hack is to call the new claims number, say oops I called the wrong number can you put me through the the right one - and you know what happens - you skip the enquiry lines queue!!!!!!!!!
Job Centre - Took them 6 months and 18 people to accept an increase in my rent and my new tenancy agreement
UC - 8 months unable to accept a fit note which signs me off work for life (given my critical conditions)
PIP - Probably the most straight forwards, fill it out send it off and wait 6 months (they do eventually get back - but make no excuse on the backlog).

What a completely stupid page asking what is being struggled with - if you guys were anything like yourselfs you would submit weekly freedom of information requests on call waiting times and just post it on the site and expose the madness of this.

A reform is not the solution - you are putting more genuinely disabled people at risk and making health conditions worse!!!!!!

Been trying to report a change in circumstances to ESA and have been on hold for over an hour. There really should be an online form to report changes as we are the ones who get penalised if we don’t report the changes. How can you report a change if you can’t get through to anyone.

Been trying to contact ESA for over a week. 2 weeks ago they told me I’ve been getting deductions for the last 4 years I shouldn’t have been. It took me 20 minutes to get through that time. Now they owe me money and I’m trying to figure it all out and I’m on hold now for what has been 2 hours 3 minutes.

I’ve been trying to get through to the PIP enquiry line but after going through all the automated stuff I just hear beeping and then get hung up on. I’m not even opposed to waiting to talk, I’d be happy to wait if it at least meant I could talk to someone!
