The Daily Mail has today published an article highlighting a ‘rebellion’ by Labour MPs ‘over plans to end benefits for needy pensioners’. 

The Mail is clearly only prepared to offer claimants support once they are rendered palatable to tabloid editors by becoming pensioners.  Nonetheless, the paper’s coverage of the threat to DLA and AA is the first red top attention for this issue and will be welcomed by campaigners.

According to the Mail a backbench revolt against plans to axe AA and DLA for over-65s is being led by disabled Labour MP Anne Begg, along with Roger Berry, chairman of the commons disability group, and Jeremy Corbyn.

The paper quotes conservative health spokesman Andrew Lansley as saying that a National Care Service ‘must not be funded by snatching benefits back from 2.4 million vulnerable pensioners’
