Two long-established law centres in Manchester are almost certain to close following the withdrawal of their legal aid funding, according to the Legal Action Group.

South Manchester Law Centre has been in existence for 36 years in one of the city’s most deprived areas and fourteen staff now face redundancy.  Wythenshawe Law Centre, based on a huge council estate, has been running for 26 years and is likely to lose all seven staff.

The closures are due to the council and the Legal Services Commission withdrawing all their funding in favour of a consortium made up of a citizens advice bureau and firms of solicitors.
