The DWP say that the £10 Christmas bonus should normally be paid in the first full week in December, but we are now well into the second full week in December and we are still hearing from people who haven’t had theirs yet.

Have you had yours?  Let us know in the comments below.

How the Christmas bonus shows on your statement

The payment will normally show up as a single £10 payment with the reference ‘DWP XB’

It was originally introduced in 1972 and it was a payment of £10 way back then as well.

According to the Bank of England’s inflation calculator, if the Christmas bonus had kept pace with inflation it would now be worth £108.63.

Who is eligible

You must also get at least one of the following benefits in the ‘qualifying week’ - this is normally the first full week of December:

  • Adult Disability Payment
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Child Disability Payment
  • Constant Attendance Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)
  • Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (once the main phase of the benefit is entered after the first 13 weeks of claim)
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Incapacity Benefit at the long-term rate
  • Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers)
  • Mobility Supplement
  • Pension Credit - the guarantee element
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit)
  • Severe Disablement Allowance (transitionally protected)
  • Unemployability Supplement or Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)
  • War Disablement Pension at State Pension age
  • War Widow’s Pension
  • Widowed Mother’s Allowance
  • Widowed Parent’s Allowance
  • Widow’s Pension

What to do if you haven’t got your Christmas bonus

The DWP say you should contact the Jobcentre Plus office that deals with your benefits or the Pension service.  Unfortunately there does not seem to be an online form you can use to report non-payment.

Actually it is paid to ESA recipients if your on income related ESA.I may have got mine paid because I raised the issue within the timeframe but I really do not know. I received the letter from DWP stating it was the Xmas bonus but no apology for lateness or explanation.
I think if this is more a Scottish issue then it would make sense to call SSS if you feel your entitled in December to ensure your name is included on the list they send to DWP in the future. It is a hassle I know but in many cases £10 can keep lights on or a few meals in your belly at Winter time

@Kenny A I tried raising the issue right at the beginning of January and I got no-where with it. They eventually paid it 7 months late but no letter at all, the £10 just appeared in my account.

Now what to spend it on beans or electric decisions decisions

@Kenny A I am in Scotland and have only just been paid it. £10 has appeared in my bank account from DWP so I presume that it is the Christmas bonus from last year, 7 months late.

Everyone listen! If you are not on PIP you will not be entitled to the christmas bonus. I see alot of people saying they on ESA and still haven't recieved it, well you won't because you don't qualify for it. Don't listen to stupid people telling you that you can get it because it's not true you only can get it if you are on PIP they don't issue out 10 pound bonuses to everyone. If you are on UC or ESA or jsa anything other than PIP you are not entitled that's why you haven't recieved it

@James I receive both income related ESA (which does qualify) and ADP the Scottish version of PIP. And I can assure everyone it is paid on ESA if it’s the income related ESA. I had many phone calls over this and it always backtracked to ESA. SSS do not pay it it must come from DWP only

@James Not strictly true - if you’re on contribution based esa you are entitled to it.

People have spent more cash phoning DWP about there missing 10pound. Its only a tenner won't even buy you a meal why stress out and call everyone for a tenner. You have proberbly spent more than a tenner phoning dwp it's not even worth it

SSS must send a list to DWP of who is entitled to the £10 !!! So they need to take the responsibility of those that do not receive the money. How else can the DWP know who to send the cash to. The SSS ADP is a circus run by the clowns.!!! Sad to say but it was better under one umbrella at DWP.

@Kenny A I get old style ESA as well as ADP, so the ESA people know that I get ADP as I get slightly more ESA for being on ADP, but the ESA people still lied to me and would not pay me the £10 Christmas bonus.

The DWP ESA people view it as not being their problem as ADP is a Scottish benefit, even though the christmas bonus is DWP.

Never received the £10 bonus and followed media instructions and left it past 1st Jan. Called DWP on 4th and told would get within the week. Needless to say wasted a week looking at bank statements. Then back on the phone numerous DWP numbers to get passed pillar to post ADP wanted nothing to do with it. Told to go to job centre they promised to look into it and never got back to me after another week went back to ask for update and no joy. Today 22 nd Jan tried DWP and surprise surprise transferred my call to SSS ADP who said he would email the dept who liaise with DWP and try to get payment sorted out. Total disgrace SSS it’s a shambles they must be using Horizon computer programs. It’s crap that nobody was given the choice of staying with DWP or transferring to ADP.
As I was told payment was coming 4 th Jan I will keep hounding them and I will not accept being told that payment date has closed.

@Kenny A I am the same. I have gone round in circles. No-one from DWP will sort it for me, as no-one wants to pay it as I am on ADP. I phoned DWP on the 2nd january and got told it would get sorted and that someone would phone me, I checked my bank statement every day and no payment and no phone call. I tried phoning again on the 17th january and went round in circles. I was crying on the phone. Again I got told it would get sorted and that someone would phone me. I also got told to go into my job center in person but that is over 30 mins drive away and I don't drive. By them saying that it will get sorted and that someone will phone me is just a way of them getting me off of the phone.

@Michael laing I am also in Scotland.

I phoned up on 2nd January the local jobcentre plus office like it says on the DWP website, I spoke to someone who said that it would get sorted within a few days and that someone would phone me about it. I heard nothing and got no payment.

I then phoned up the same jobcentre plus office again yesterday and the DWP guy on the phone tried to tell me he couldn't do anything and he said I had to speak to SSS due to being on ADP so he redirected the phonecall to SSS. Well the SSS person did not want to know at all due to them not being DWP, I tried asking him for a phone number for DWP and he gave me the PIP phone number.

I then looked on my ESA mail for a phone number of a different jobcentre plus. The guy on the phone told me that I don't qualify for the Christmas bonus due to being on income related ESA, but I tried to say that I qualify due to being on ADP, he said he couldn't sort the payment so he redirected the phonecall to PIP. The PIP guy said he couldn't help but he got a case manager to speak to me who said that as I am on ADP and not PIP then he couldn't make the payment but he said it was ESA that had to pay me it, I told him that the ESA guy told me I didn't qualify and that ESA won't pay me it due to being on income ESA and the PIP guy told me 110% I do qualify for the Christmas bonus and he told me to phone ESA up again.

I phoned the DWP ESA phone number again only for the guy to want to send me back to SSS. But I tried to say that I have gone around in circles and that SSS can't help as they are not DWP, and that I qualify for the christmas bonus due to being on ADP. He then said there is a form he has to fill in to email to someone and that it would be sorted and that someone will phone me about it.

I was in tears to both the ESA and the PIP people as I have social and communication difficulties so making phone calls are difficult.

I don't have my hopes up. But this is making my mental health worse as it is more to worry about.

I know it is only £10 but I was meant to get it as I have had it previous years when I was on PIP (although they missed one year for no reason and I never knew how to anything about it then).

If you were claiming UC or ESA alone you will not have recieved it because you are not eligible, you only would have recieved it if your claiming 2 benefits example like UC and PIP you won't get it if your just claiming 1 benefit like UC or ESA

Anyone that still hasn't recieved their christmas bonus won't now as its reached the deadline date so no more christmas bonuses are being handed out unless u have spoke to them and they have confirmed u are getting it otherwise u will not as no more are being handed out now. Just thought I would let you know no point checking your bank because it won't go in now. Next one won't be handed out until the end of the year.you only get christmas bonus if your on pip you won't get it if you were just claiming UC or ESA u have to be receiving atleast 2 benefits (not including child benefit)
