The DWP say that the £10 Christmas bonus should normally be paid in the first full week in December, but we are now well into the second full week in December and we are still hearing from people who haven’t had theirs yet.

Have you had yours?  Let us know in the comments below.

How the Christmas bonus shows on your statement

The payment will normally show up as a single £10 payment with the reference ‘DWP XB’

It was originally introduced in 1972 and it was a payment of £10 way back then as well.

According to the Bank of England’s inflation calculator, if the Christmas bonus had kept pace with inflation it would now be worth £108.63.

Who is eligible

You must also get at least one of the following benefits in the ‘qualifying week’ - this is normally the first full week of December:

  • Adult Disability Payment
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Child Disability Payment
  • Constant Attendance Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)
  • Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (once the main phase of the benefit is entered after the first 13 weeks of claim)
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Incapacity Benefit at the long-term rate
  • Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers)
  • Mobility Supplement
  • Pension Credit - the guarantee element
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit)
  • Severe Disablement Allowance (transitionally protected)
  • Unemployability Supplement or Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)
  • War Disablement Pension at State Pension age
  • War Widow’s Pension
  • Widowed Mother’s Allowance
  • Widowed Parent’s Allowance
  • Widow’s Pension

What to do if you haven’t got your Christmas bonus

The DWP say you should contact the Jobcentre Plus office that deals with your benefits or the Pension service.  Unfortunately there does not seem to be an online form you can use to report non-payment.

So it’s the 21 December and I’ve just checked my bank account.  Still not received my £10 Xmas payment from PIP.  I had £10 Xmas payment from DWP  ages ago as I also receive state pension.  Surely I should receive £10 for each PIP and State pension shouldn’t I? Not just one pay, ent.

Why can the DWP add £10 to some people's legacy benefits but could not add the £20 a week that people on UC got during the pandemic?  It's the same computer system.

Entitled as on PIP and a few other benefits. My Wife gets cares allowance and she gets the £10 Xmas bonus. I have never, ever had the Xmas bonus in all the years I have been a claimant. I was under the impression that only one person per house hold got the Xmas Bonus. Am I right or wrong ?

@joss No, that isn't right. You can write to them to ask for previous years - can take a while, but you'll probably get it eventually.

Universal credit alone cannot claim but if on one of the other allowed benefits all is entitled to the bonus. I still hadn't had mine and telephoned PIP they first told me it was UC that should be paying the bonus. When I said the government doesn't allow UC claimants alone to get it. The lady then said yes you are right it should come from us and although it states the first full week in December it is paid she then replied with it goes out in batches up until January 2023.

No sign of it yet, not supprised as i have had  to chase this up every year since i went onto PIP.
It's who pushes the button to pay it.
PIP say its up to Carers Allowance, they say it's ESA as I get a carers supplement with my ESA, they say it's PIP, and so the great runaround continues.
I may eventually get it in the Summer, but not sure if I'll bother chasing it this year, It costs me more in phone bills, and waisted time than it is actually worth, and after a decade of doing so it's not worth the hassle.
Mind you if it were the other way around and I owed then a tenner, they would all probably take a tenner each.
Another example of this broken system, that they pay lip service to.

I’ve unfortunately been on benefits for 9 years. It hadn’t occurred to me to check before now but going back through bank statements I received the £10 the first 3 years then never again since. I receive qualifying benefits so can’t understand why I haven’t but I honestly cannot be bothered with dealing with DWP more than I have to for £10. It’s hard enough when it comes to reviews where my medical evidence is astronomical and speaks for itself and I still have to fight!
