Iain Duncan Smith, Work and Pensions Secretary, is reported in the Daily Express to have reacted angrily to Chancellor George Osborne’s decision to up-rate jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) by 5.2% from April 2012.

Although JSA will only increase by £3.51 per week, from £67.50 to £71.01, he believes this will act as a disincentive to the unemployed to find work.

In response to Mr Duncan Smith’s outrage about the decision, Mr Clegg, Deputy Leader stated his commitment to ensuring that those who have lost their jobs “through no fault of their own” should have benefits and that he fully endorsed the Chancellor’s position. Mr Duncan Smith vehemently insisted the policy would be reversed in 2013.

Mr Duncan Smith has clearly never had to live on £71.01 per week.
