Figures obtained by the Press Association show that the number of claimants getting zero points for both components of personal independence payment (PIP) has almost doubled, with no explanation for the increase.

The figures show that 83,000 claimants got zero points for both components in the six months between April and October 2016.

However, the total for the preceding 12 months was just 93,000 claimants getting zero points.

In total, 134,000 claimants got zero points for either one or both components in the six months between April and October 2016.

The DWP have denied that there is any sort of crackdown on PIP awards.
