The government have dropped virtually all sanctions from its work experience scheme following an outcry against firms such as Tesco, who were accused of using ‘​slave labour’​ on social media sites.

Until yesterday, claimants on jobseeker’​s allowance taking part in voluntary eight week work experience schemes faced losing their benefit if they dropped out after the first week. However, claimants will now be free to drop out at any time without facing sanctions. The only reason for which a sanction of two weeks loss of benefit will still apply is if a claimant is dismissed from the scheme for gross misconduct.
