In a strong signal that the propaganda campaign against claimants by the coalition may be set to intensify, a former tabloid managing editor has been appointed as director of communications at the DWP. Richard Caseby was managing editor of the Sunday Times until 2011, when he became joint managing editor of both the Sun and the News of the World, just weeks before the phone hacking scandal began. {jcomments on}
Rupert Murdoch has praised Caseby as a ‘loyal and distinguished’ executive who was ‘passionate’ in his defence of the Murdoch empire during the Levenson enquiry.
Mr Caseby said:
“Welfare reform and the introduction of Universal Credit represent the biggest transformation programme in the UK. It is fundamentally about changing culture and behaviour to make sure there is always an incentive to work.
“This is a huge and inspiring communications challenge and I’m delighted to be joining the DWP team to help in the task.”
