The DWP states “over the next 5 days we will be giving you advice on how to get into good job-seeking habits - from detoxing your CV and dressing for success to social networking yourself into a job and how to set up your own business. So let’s make this year one you won’t forget. Get that first step on the career ladder and land your dream job! Here’s employment Minister Esther McVey to share a few wise words on how to pin down that first job.”
She refers us to the Facebook site by the DWP as well as to the twitter page.
The Facebook page states” The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare and pension policy and is a key player in tackling child poverty.” It goes on to link to sites giving advice on ‘How to become a chef’. Interestingly, it includes a feature called ‘dress for success’.

Avoid cleavage displays, midriff tops, informal clothing such as T shirts with slogans, beach sandals, and loud “bling” jewellery.
• A suit in a solid colour is always a good choice
• Check clothes are ironed, that there are no ladders in your tights!
• Leave the killer heels for a night out – instead opt for a comfortable shoe with a sensible heel
• Limited jewellery
• Neat hairstyle
• Sophisticated make-up
• Sparse perfume
• Portfolio or briefcase

Fortunately, men’s fashion is relatively straightforward. Using a few basic pieces, it's easy to put together an outfit that is professional.
Men's Interview Attire
• If wearing a suit – solid colour
• White long sleeve shirt
• Be sure to wear a tie (and not a Superman or Bart Simpson one…)
• Dark socks, professional shoes
• Very limited jewellery
• Neat, professional hairstyle
• Go easy on the aftershave (there’s nothing worse than knocking out a room of interviewees with an overwhelming cologne/aftershave
• Neatly trimmed nails
• Portfolio or briefcase – leave the sports bag for the gym”
