The DWP has confirmed in its latest personal independence payment (PIP) statistical release that many planned award reviews are on hold, but that claimants will continue to receive their current level of benefit until a review takes place.

In the DWP’s latest PIP Official Statistics to January 2022, published yesterday, the DWP admitted that planned reviews of PIP awards that were given for a fixed period are not all taking place because staff are working on “other parts of the process” instead.

“Planned award reviews are currently on hold in some cases which frees up resource to process registrations in other parts of the process but delays clearances for the award reviews themselves.”

In fact, the number of new claims is up 20% compared to November to January of last year.  So, a deluge of new claims is the “other part of the process” that staff are working on instead.  The bottleneck appears to be primarily in getting claimants assessed by Capita and Atos (IAS).

However, in the same document, the DWP do confirm that claimants who are waiting for their award to be reviewed will continue to receive PIP at the same rate.

“Any PIP claim where an award review is waiting to be processed continues to receive their pre-review level of benefit. Customers whose needs have changed and who are awaiting a review may instead register a change of circumstance.”

The confirmation that awards will continue in payment will come as a great relief to many thousands of claimants who have been left in a state of anxiety and uncertainty by a lack of news from the DWP about their award review.

PIP ward reviews backlog set to last

There are now over a third of a million (340,000) new claims ‘in progress’, meaning that they have yet to be completed and are probably mostly waiting for an assessment.

Waiting times for decisions on new claims have gone up from 19 weeks a year ago, to 22 weeks now.  Of this, most of the wait is for an assessment, up from 15 weeks a year ago to 17 weeks now.

Given the size of this backlog and the effect of the pandemic on people’s physical and mental health, which means new claim numbers are likely to remain very high, there seems little chance of Capita and Atos getting on top of things any time soon.

So, claimants awaiting a planned PIP review may be waiting a long time yet.

I am currently at 13 months waiting for a review.  Mine should go up because I was in a car accident and now been diagnosed with some more issues than I had before.  The benefits advisor got my local MP involved 3 months ago and still nothing has changed.  The local MP was really impressed he got an extension to my payments to end of September.  What a waste of time and this whole process is really frustrating.  I have now given up on chasing for my review, doubt it will ever be done now.  Tory Britain for you

@Gs Yes it usually is 12 months before , although you should recieve one and send it back , then there is no time scale for it to actually be reviewed , from my own experience if there is no change and you provide relevant documents it could be reviewed quicker , if you need to be seen by an accessor then could take awhile , good luck

My carers allowance is stopping I presume due to the fact my pip renewal hasn't been done yet. They said it would be extended for 3 months at a time so how do we get our other things to continue like carers allowance

We're all in the same boat. My review was due July 2021. I keep getting a 3 month extension and will continue to do so until my case is assessed. My Blue Badge has run out and I have no way of renewing it.

@Jules#71 you can still get a blue badge without the PIP evidence I did, just sent them the medical evidence to the issuing authority, put a note in explaining.

@Jules#71 You can apply to your local council directly for a blue badge and they may issue you one on a discretionary basis.

Has anyone had a successful review this year? It seems claimants are returning their forms as requested and then being put in an indefinite queue. Tory Britain at it's worst

@Jayne this is actually a positive review. I was informed by text that they have received my claim regarding extra severely disabled mobility. They expla8ned my money wouldn’t stop as I pay carersand it would backdated when checks made. In all the years dlabaronce with requested home visit, very good considering I suffer with severe anxiety aswell and hardly go out bar nhs appointments. It also took twenty minutes only to answer my call too. I think considering the influx in new claims and not takin away from the extreme anxiety etc these, letters bring, they have a overload off new claimants, probably down to covid impact.most off the time they do their best but everything in our countries a mess atm. I think we should be grateful considering we can’t work that social security exists.  If we lived 8n America most off us be liv8ng way 7nder poverty line. This email comes from somebody who had lifetime pip award past twenty years.I understand the frustrations etc but it’s not personal. It’s simply a overload in new claims.being patient only best thing to do as ou5 off our control re times e5c. Ihope everybody gets the help they need , I’m just grateful I even get help now otherwise I have no carersor quality off life

Phoned pip again as it's almost 6mths since my review went in. Asked am I to have an extension as my money ends early oct? Told again,It's gone to an assessor and if I heard nothing by next month (sept) to call back. Absolutely useless. I'm ready to scream,I'm already bouncing off walls over the entire thing as it is.
I swear if I died tomorrow I would not care because this is nothing buy mental cruelty.Evidence after evidence means nothing, they clearly don't read it. Tribunals mean nothing, letters from consultants  and GPS mean nothing, assessment  after assessment ,Tax payers money burned away all to keep us from claiming what we are entitled to.Money that could be sunk into the disability sector to do some real good. Ppl on the outside who have never been through the process don't get it and never will, they think we see all liars spongers ahd cheats, well far as I see if you'd be a bl*ody goodun if you could cheat a pip assessment and deserve a medal because its hell for us genuine "claiments" with no end in sight.

Pip have now had my renewal form and change in circumstances since June 2021. I have been waiting 14 months and now my car needs repairs that I cannot afford, I am housebound. After ringing numerous times I was told that due to my circumstances, my claim would be fast tracked. I still haven't heard anything months later. (except the usual text to say they still have my form)
I am at a loss. My mental health is worsening due to my physical health and my physical health is worsening due to my mental health.

Sent my review forms back in sept 2021 they recieved them Oct 2021. Had 2 text message to say they have my forms and my payments will continue to be paid at current rate until reviewed. I called them and was told my review needed assessment and they can't get the appointments with the medical professionals. My review was logged for assessment in December 2021 but has not yet been sent too assessors to even get on a list for an appointment. They have no idea how long it will be until I will get an appointment. PIP was due to end August 2022 but on their system it's now November 2022. I received no msg or anything to tell me this but on the phone they told me that they will extend for 3 months at a time until review is carried out and will continue to be paid at current rate.

Review form sent back early March this year, pip ends Oct. Phoned them three weeks ago and asked what's happening to be told its gone to an assessor, as there was a 'wee change' ! What change? I never reported any change.id hear something soon, wonder what 'soon is'.So I will be phoning them again if I hear nothing by my sept payment asking if its been extended and also letting esa know as I get sdp.I also understood if you won pip at tribunal as i have twice ,after getting zero points first time coming from indefinite dla, that you did not get a review as dwp can't change a tribunal decision, you must instead put in a fresh pip claim as I had to do after first award ran out. So in short I won at tribunal twice,so why a review second time and not a fresh claim as I understood by law that's what it should be or do they make it up as they go along.Either way I dread the entire thing. My MH is suffering tenfold and I've no one who even wants to let me talk about the entire pip process and how it makes me feel.

I sent my review form back end of June 2021, they got the forms on 01/7/21, they sent me a text on 01/09/21 that they have my forms, my PIP ended in March 2022 still no decision waiting. I have permanent disability unlikely to improve, it will get worse with time.

Hello I sent my p.i.p review form off in December 2021. They had received it on the 13th of Dec 2021. I got a text message on the 9th of June saying they still in progress of my claim and will be looking into it ASAP. I rang them the 26th July 2022 to be told I'm still in a queue as the review back logs are big!. 33 weeks and still counting. Its an absolute joke!. I feel like the tele phone assesments are pointless as they are not going to see how you really are!.

@Mandy Same here, review was meant to be June 2021, meanwhile they keep sneakily trying to close my claim every 3 months unless I get someone to phone them (I'm deaf...)

I sent my renewal forms into DWP End of july 2021.  The form should have been received 6th August 2021.  I am still awaiting my review to even be looked at.  The person helping me has got my local MP involved, not that he is of any use whatsoever, and just get a 3 monthly text saying you are still waiting.  12 months now I have been waiting, with no sign of any assessment date or even looking at the forms.  Frustrating is an understatement.
