The DWP has confirmed in its latest personal independence payment (PIP) statistical release that many planned award reviews are on hold, but that claimants will continue to receive their current level of benefit until a review takes place.

In the DWP’s latest PIP Official Statistics to January 2022, published yesterday, the DWP admitted that planned reviews of PIP awards that were given for a fixed period are not all taking place because staff are working on “other parts of the process” instead.

“Planned award reviews are currently on hold in some cases which frees up resource to process registrations in other parts of the process but delays clearances for the award reviews themselves.”

In fact, the number of new claims is up 20% compared to November to January of last year.  So, a deluge of new claims is the “other part of the process” that staff are working on instead.  The bottleneck appears to be primarily in getting claimants assessed by Capita and Atos (IAS).

However, in the same document, the DWP do confirm that claimants who are waiting for their award to be reviewed will continue to receive PIP at the same rate.

“Any PIP claim where an award review is waiting to be processed continues to receive their pre-review level of benefit. Customers whose needs have changed and who are awaiting a review may instead register a change of circumstance.”

The confirmation that awards will continue in payment will come as a great relief to many thousands of claimants who have been left in a state of anxiety and uncertainty by a lack of news from the DWP about their award review.

PIP ward reviews backlog set to last

There are now over a third of a million (340,000) new claims ‘in progress’, meaning that they have yet to be completed and are probably mostly waiting for an assessment.

Waiting times for decisions on new claims have gone up from 19 weeks a year ago, to 22 weeks now.  Of this, most of the wait is for an assessment, up from 15 weeks a year ago to 17 weeks now.

Given the size of this backlog and the effect of the pandemic on people’s physical and mental health, which means new claim numbers are likely to remain very high, there seems little chance of Capita and Atos getting on top of things any time soon.

So, claimants awaiting a planned PIP review may be waiting a long time yet.

I just got a text at 9.45pm from Independent Assessment Services - first time I've ever heard from them. Its automated says they conduct the PIP assessments and they will look at my evidence. Is this the new people they've passed it onto. Looks like a whole mess is about to unfold my AR1 was sent in Jan 2022. Has anyone else got this text or had their assessment through them and to what avail? I feel sick.

      @Liz Hi Liz
My daughter has just received the same text message. And is stressing over all this because it's taking so long to sort out. She has already lost an eye to glaucoma. And stress causes the pressure in her other eye to escalate. The other eye only has around 25% vision. So I am extremely worried about it all. Is this a genuine message. Kind regards

Does autism qualify for Pip? My appointee already is waiting on the AR1, but has been dx ADHD as an adult female and has been advised to take the ASD assessment. Therfore this is likely a adult female with an extremely late diagnosis (30s) which explains the root cause of all the issues mentally and physically that qualified them for pip to begin with. Please don't offer advice to report changes as the assessment is not complete. I wonder because - if PIP decided they are no longer a viable candidate due to the high pip backlog, I now have a possible upcoming diagnosis as to why this candidate "has become" the way they are. Likely they were never able to live without aids, help and support and doing so had implicated their health mentally and physically.

Anyone else received 2 sms? I sent my review form in January as no changes  (its actually horrific i am not who i used to be I'd give anything for my old life back, I don't have one now) they only gave my assigned person 3 weeks to fill form anyway didnt hear anything for 6 MONTHS was sick with stress thinking I'm going to end up homeless. Then SMS in August confirming that they still have "your pip form and will progress as soon as we can. You may still need an assessment. We will continue to pay and you don't need to contact us unless your circumstances change" so I presumed unless I die or miraculously find Jesus comes down to specifically heal me, I have no reason to call them. I got a second text saying the same thing yesterday- 3 months after the 1st SMS.
Has this happened to anyone else? I can't go through this mental toumoil I actually needed extra support around this because we all know it won't sort itself out it will likely be the very opposite. I have this sick to my stomach all year.

@Liz I just got my 2nd text 12 weeks after the 1st that my review form had been received. I assume these are automated texts. I was told back in October 22 that the wait time was 21 weeks I'm not sure how true this is or if the wait times have now improved however I suspect different areas have different wait times.

the budget has just announced ESA allowance is getting transferred to UC I get contributions esa disability allowance. if it's moved to uc I will probably not get it and thousands more as uc is means tested . I worked since age 16 and paid into this to get benefit it should not be lumped into uc.

Had my review ( telephone assessment) today, they were 3 hrs late ringing me so my anxiety was through the roof. Apparently the system was down so it couldn’t be recorded as I’d asked for. So I said I’d go ahead but I’m 90% sure the girl they found to do it was new and not very experienced! It wasn’t as thorough as my first one was. Didn’t really connect with her, very robotic! I reported a change in May this year and just had call today!

@Richard I had to send mine back before 03.08.2022 - i did and received a text saying they had received it.  In October i got a further text to say there was backlog and they were working on it.  I called them as my blue badge runs out on 03.03.2023 (same as my PIP award) and was told there was a year backlog and would continue to get my payment. However, now reapplied for blue badge and local council (who i work for) wont re issue badge as i dont have an award notice to say its continuing

I got an extension until August 2023 in writing and a review form in September 2022 to be filled in and returned by October 7th. I got a text message to say that they had received it on October 12th and I received my following ESA payment on the 26th as normal. November 9th? A weeks worth of disability premium has suddenly gone missing, yet I have had no face to face assessment or any other form of contact with PIP other than the text they sent me with their usual generic reply telling me that they received the form and that I might have to see one of their Health Professionals. Surely the DWP cannot simply stop my disability premiums whilst I am still claiming PIP can they? I have had nothing in writing from PIP telling me that my award has been stopped. Like everything else where the DWP is concerned. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. They have probably ignored the extension letter and gone by the date my award would have ran out after my tribunal and won't even be remotely aware that my review form is already in the system.

@Carl You can reapply for a blue badge, I don’t get the mobility part of pip, even though I should, they gave me low scoring but, blue badge people have issued me with two badges based on my conditions and what I can actually manage.
