Maria Miller, minister for disabled people, has confirmed that plans to axe the mobility component of personal independence payment, the proposed replacement for disability living allowance for working age claimants, for people in care homes has been dropped after fierce opposition.

The government had proposed to remove the mobility component in its Comprehensive Spending Review in October 2010. Its proposal was based on the premise that it would remove what the government perceived as an overlap of public funds.

Following representations by many disability organisations and the findings of the Low Review, which disputed the government’​?s contention that payment of the mobility component overlapped with local authority funding and concluded that the loss of the mobility component would significantly impact on the ability of a disabled person to remain independent .
