To quote from the DWP:

''We will write to customers when their benefit becomes due for reassessment to tell them about the changes. We will also phone them to answer any questions they may have and find out if they need extra help. They do not need to contact us before they receive this letter''.

The Harrington Report criticised the ESA process for being impersonal, in an attempt to make the system more "friendly" the DWP have started contacting people by phone, not realising that the next thing to frighten claimants after a brown envelope through the door, is a call from the DWP :)

No, there is no requirement to speak to the DWP should they phone.

Our general reccomendation is that you only converse with the DWP in writing as this ensures that there is a recording of what has been "said" that can be referred to at a later date if required.

I would fully endorse what is said above.

The number the DWP use to contact claimants tends to be 08000232635.
They will not leave a voicemail or identify themselves for Data protection reasons (something about third party).

The silly thing is if you do anwser the phone they will not tell you who is ringing unless you tell them your name and confirm their security questions.

Their is a old saying that says "if you would not shout it across a room, do not give it out to a unknown person at the end of a telephone)
This rings true in todays world.
