ESA to UC enquiry was created by kittyroo
Hello,
As the wait for the migration letter from IR ESA to UC is getting me down with anxiety, I think that I will go ahead and just apply for UC and then I can relax more. Could you tell me from the moment that the application goes in how long does it take to get a reply from them, or any communication? Does it take a couple of weeks or months or is it immediate? From the moment they get my application how long do I have to send them information or receive phone calls from them? I am asking this because I am currently away from home staying with relatives and have no access to my post. I want to know when I need to go home.
thanks for any help and advice.

Hi kittyroo,
DWP guidance suggests that if an individual issued with a migration notice has not made a claim 7 weeks after receiving their migration notice, a reminder notice letter will be issued.
If no claim for UC has been made 10 weeks after the migration notice was issued, a second reminder notice issued. The second reminder is by SMS text if there is a mobile number held, otherwise it is by letter. (Page 5, Case Manager Guidance)
I would wait until you get your UC Managed Migration letter. You will then have 3 months to claim UC. If you claim before then it is called a Voluntary Migration and you will lose your Transitional Protection.

Thanks, the problem is that I have been away from home since September, so I dont know if my letter has arrived or not. Travelling is a big problem for me so I dont want to go home just on the offchance that I got a migration letter in September. All the worry is making me feel ill so I just thought I would get it over with. But my question was this, from the date of my application how long does it take for them to contact me? I would appreciate a rough approximation of the timings. thanks

Hi kittyroo,
UC is digital by default and was designed for use on a smart phone. Also it doesn't matter where in the world you are you can make a new UC claim online. Of course the DWP would not know your location.
From the date you make your new UC claim, it is one month and 7 days until your first UC payment.
