Hello everyone,

Perhaps someone can help me by telling me about your experience?

My husband has severe mental health issues. Now, if he were to apply for UC (which he is entitled to), how to survive the period when he is forced by the Job Centre to look for work until such times he is assessed he cannot work?

I have been reading large chunks of the ESA/UC Manual on the website and as far as I understand it, one has to be "looking for work" when first signing up. My husband is not entitled to ESA. If that was the case he would be able to submit sick notes from his GP. But I did not read this for the UC.

Assuming this is true and one does have to present himself/herself at the Job Centre when too unwell, how does one deal with this "looking for work" part?

Thank you for your kind advice.

Wendy

If he provides a Fit Note on the day that he makes his claim for UC then he will be excused any work until his Work Capability Assessment is completed.
