disabled sons benefits was created by Davie65
Hi all,
our son will be 18 in May. he is mentally and physically disabled with a rare condition and gets DLA at the highest rates. What other benefits is he entitled to? Myself and his mum get income support and also carers allowance. He is in full time education at a special school until he is 19.
Thanks
Dave

Once he gets to 18 he will be able to claim his own benefits. If he's able to work, then he'll be able to claim JSA, if not, then he may be able to claim ESA. It would be worth taking advice from a welfare rights adviser as to whether he will be able to claim any housing benefit. Do bear in mind that if he remains part of your household, it may affect any housing or council tax benefit you get. Again, you need face-to-face advice on that as we only advise on ESA and DLA on here.

I forgot to mention that if he does apply for ESA, do take a look at our guides so that you can help him with the forms.

Hi, this is my first post so excuse my butting in, but felt I should mention that if your son is in full time education you should be able to claim Child Benefit / Child Tax Credit for him while he is still in school up until his 20th Birthday.

Hi,
Thanks for the information, James won't be able to work unfortunately and will always have to live at home with us thankfully. Can he still get ESA even though he will still be in his special school fulltime until he is 19? Would it affect our Income Support not just HB and CTB? We will book an appointment with an advisor aswell.
Thanks
Dave

I can't advise you on the effects on your income support, but you must notify the DWP of changes like that.
