Carers Allowance was created by Lorraine Coombs
I have just had my application for Carers Allowance refused,(my husband has Parkinsons) because I claim Incapacity Benefit for myself.

I cannot find anything about this on the DWP website.

Are they correct in refusing my claim?

Thanks.

So far as I am aware, you cannot get CA if you are on IB, but if you have an "underlying entitlement" to it, i.e. if you would otherwise get it, it may push the amount they say you have to live off up high enough for you to get an IS top-up to your IB, with a carer's premium. The IS would be means-tested.

If, however, you want to know exactly what your position is, you need to seek face-to-face advice from someone who can carry out a detailed benefits check for you.

If you are a carer for someone, the activities you carry out in caring may be taken into account when assessing your fitness for work. However, it is possible both to be unfit for work and to be a carer, particularly where one partner is mentally ill/disabled and the other is physically ill/disabled.

The guidance in DMG Chapter 17 on overlapping benefits applies to CA
