Thanks for the figures. If you have BPD as well, it gets very complicated working out what symptom to attribute to what, as well, and the general impression I get is that self harm and parasuicidal activity and mood swings get taken less seriously once you have a BPD dx.

I think it's so much easier if, like me, you have a widely recognised condition with a good press.

You are probably right survivor, moreover in my experience before BPD was recognised as a mental illness there were many patients given the diagnosis Bi polar disorder so they could be treated.
For many this has meant duel diagnosis or more recently a change of diagnosis to BPD so the correct treatment could be given. This has added to the patients’ confusion over what symptoms fit what diagnosis.
It has also been seen as a ‘downgrade’ by some patients, as you say as BPD isn’t as understood or tolerated as well as bi polar.

Don’t peoples CPN’s or staff in the hospital help people fill out benefit forms anymore? Or indeed explain or provide necessary information to patients?
I am increasingly surprised by this on this forum.

While this thread is here;

please could someone tell me what catagory of mental health the following fits in to;

four or five mood swings in 12 hours; sometimes dramaticly changing from one to another.

Many thanks,
Rachel

Do you mean in diagnostic terms or in benefits terms?

In benefits terms, it would not be the mood swings per se that would be relevant, but the impact of them.

In terms of diagnosis, there are several conditions that can lead to rapid mood swings between low mood and high mood, including cyclothymia, borderline personality disorder, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder. Unipolar depression can lead to rapid mood swings between normal mood and depressed.

If you have rapid mood swings and they are interfering with your life, then it is well worth seeing your doctor about them.

Thankyou for that information Survivor, very helpful.

For benefits purposes, a diagnosis may be useful. I did try and tell ATOS how it affected me.

I have been seeing the doctor re depression for at least 15 years now.You seem much more knowledgeable than my local GP's!

I think I should muster up the mental strength to see doctor again; I feel like an emotional yoyo a few days a week at the moment.

Thankyou so much,
Rachel
