HELP/ADVICE PLEASE CARER ON INCAPACITY! was created by mrbluesky57
I am currently receiving incapacity benefit and awaiting medical. I have bi polar and other conditions. My mother who is 81 and is bed ridden is cared for by my family and myself. We are just about coping and delaying the decision where she will have to go into a home. Is this taken into consideration when I have my medical assesment? Do I need to have written proof that we are carers and to some extent that I am her carer? If I am forced too seek work, basically she would have to go into a home as my wife has to work! Like everyone else I have no idea whats coming, and I think we need a revoltion like in Egypt! Id appreciate any advice please.

Being a carer won't assist your IB renewal, as IB is not there to pay your living costs for caring.

Going further, if you're going to mention that you're a carer, make sure you give a balanced picture. It would be easy for an assessor to think that if you are a carer you have no problems yourself. So think it through first - what sort of care do you provide and how does it fit in with your own condition and your own fitness for work?

Read the guides on here to IB and make sure you are satisfied that you are entitled to IB. Be aware that the questions you are asked at a medical are not designed to tease out long answers, so you need to be careful how you answer them in order to ensure the assessor gets a fair picture of you and doesn't leap to conclusions based on a little bit of information.

Many thanks for your help and advice! Totally understand where you are coming from regarding caring for mother. Which basically I dont do. My wife and daughter do most of it! I wont mention the help with care, thanks to you! I think over the years we have saved the government thousands by struggling to keep mom at home! But I know understand it could jeopordise my claim if I say I help. Many thanks once again!

I know it's saying the obvious, but whilst you may find it helpful not to mention off your own bat that you do any caring, do be prepared for how you're going to answer any questions that may arise that could touch on this in any way. It goes without saying that any answers you give must be true.
