i will be medically assessed again with a PCA in july, so that i will continue on IS or have my benefit changed to JSA depending on the outcome. apparently i couldn't apply for ESA if i am changed over, it has to be JSA. yet later in the year, if still on IS i will be transferred over to and reassessed for ESA with a WCA assessment. it's all very uncertain, and i can't make up my mind what would be the best benefit outcome for me. i have recurrent mental illness (chronic but fluctuating for years) and have just begun private clinical psychotherapy.

You cannot choose which benefit/allowance is the best in your particular circumstances, as the benefit to which you may be entitled, is defined in the Social Security Acts.
Having said that, the DWP certainly wouldn't mind if you voluntarily relinquished you current entitlement to IS on the grounds of sickness/disability in order to claim JSA, as they would be the winner and you the loser in this situation.
