JSA was created by simber9
I know it's not the type of problem we usually see on this forum but my brother who is genuinly disabled has been signed onto JSA. The Jobcentre has taken three weeks to process his claim and have now told him that he is not entitled to have his money backdated. Does anybody know if this could be true or is it just another way of scamming him out of his money?
Many thanks

As moderators, our remit is to deal with sickness and disability benefits, to try to give more information/advice on the guides in the members only area.
However, you can find full details of JSA on the DirectGov website Job Seekers Allowance
However, as far as I know if any social security benefit payment is delayed due to the DWP taking too long to process a JSA claim, it should be backdated up to a month.
If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me.

Your brother is entitled to receive JSA at least from the date of claim. In some cases it is possible to have a claim backdated earlier than this, in certain limited circumstances.
If the Jobcentreplus office is refusing your brother's claim from the earliest possible date, he is entitled to appeal the decision and the award letter when he eventually receives it, should convey this statutory right. If it does not and he is not satisfied with the decision, he should appeal in any event.
