KEIR STARMER : EVERYONE MUST WORK was created by axab43
I saw a newspaper report where Keir Starmer said everyone on sickness benefits must work. THat was it. So does that mean people with severe mental health issues, who cannot be around people, must work. People who have severe physical illness who are in a lot of pain must work.
This sounds like it is going back to the work house mentality. Is this even legal and this would mean dismissing everyone from sickness assessment, as no matter what is wrong with you, you must go out into the work place? Can the Government do this? This sounds far more far right than the Tories ever were.

I know. I was just wondering what people's thoughts were as Keir Starmer is coming across as making very rash statements. Scope, who are an organisation to support the disabled (mentally or physically), said half of what Starmer is talking about would be impossible to put into place, in reality. Yet he still says it and causes so much distress.

It has definitely made my anxiety go through the roof. It's affecting my sleeping. My nutrition and wellbeing. He has no idea of the detrimental affect he us having on sick and disabled people!

I think what he actually said was that the 'basic proposition' should be that everyone on long-term sick should look for work but conceded there will be 'hard cases'. Perhaps quite how he would define 'hard cases' will be made clearer in the budget.
I'll be 65 in April 2025. I was recently a self-employed domestic cleaner and getting Working Tax Credit of £163 per month. I had to stop working and I'm in the process of claiming UC (hence my subscription here). I am thinking I will have no chance of getting into the LCWRA.
Even if I was fit enough, who would employ me when I am so close to retirement? I only have my state pension to look forward to so it looks as if I'll have to manage on the standard rate of UC, which once the 15% CT people on benefits have to pay and a portion of rent (I live in social housing), I'll be left with around £85 per week to live on until I retire unless Keir Starmer manages to force me into work...

I will be 62 in December. I wish I was older as my mental health is so bad, there is no way I could go in a work place. With some people, it is just not possible and Keir Starmer is so grossly irresponsible to make comments that will make people who are ill worse not better.
(He always quotes that it has been proven it is better for people with mental health issues to work but mental ill health affects people in so many different ways, you cannot treat everyone the same. Grossly irresponsible when mental health issues can even result in suicide. I doubt Keir Starmer would care.... could not get more Tory than he is now.)
