Hi,
Q. When is my claim likely to be backdated to?
Previously awarded lowest rate for both elements of PIP. My health deteriorated further in Oct 23.
Review was due earlier this year and I was too ill to handle dealing with filling in a form any sooner so in March 24 when the review form was sent I phoned and told pip that my circumstances had changed. Form was completed and submitted by deadline in May 24.
Paper based health professional assessment which I received a copy of 2 days ago has ticked boxes equivalent to awarding 17 points for living and 12 for mobility. I know the final decision could change but *IF* I am awarded the higher rate for both elements then when can my claim be backdated to?
My understanding is that it should at least be March when I called PIP to notify them but I have been told that they can go further back if there is evidence of the change happening before this ( I understand a change has to be in place for 3 months first before claiming).
In Oct 23 my most severe condition got worse and I was seen at A&E after collapsing. I have written evidence of this and further evidence showing repeated episodes from this date onwards.

I can't give a definitive answer to your question because there is no consistent approach to backpay, and it will come down to the decision-maker. As you informed them of the change of circumstances, I would expect it to go back to March 24. Although your health deteriorated before then, even if you provide them with proof, they won't necessarily backdate it further. That would be their choice and very little you can do about it.
The worst-case scenario is that they will forget that this is a change of circumstances and will not backdate it at all—in which case you will have to argue with them and remind them.
