ESA, JSA and UC was created by BH9983
Hello,

I have been very sick over the past year and have stopped all of my jobs and responsibilities due to my health. My employer can longer pay me sick pay. So they said they would give me an SSP form to take to the job centre.

I have the full-year NI contributions over the past 10 years.

This is my first time applying for any kind of benefit, so I am a bit of a "nube".

My question is, what benefit should I go about applying for first? ESA, JSA, or UC? Is there a specific order to be entitled? Should I apply for all of them?

I am hesitant to apply for UC first because I have not moved out of my current accommodation (living with the father of my children but we are separated and I am single) (See previous post for more info on this if curious). I am still going to apply for UC but I'd imagine it'll be a bit of a battle.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Warmest regards,
BH

Hi BH9983

Thank you for your question, it would depend on a number of factors depending on your National Insurance.

If you apply for UC then it takes 5 weeks before you receive first payment and then you get paid monthly, if you apply for NS ESA and successful then you will get paid every two weeks, if you are placed in the support group then your claim will carry on until you are next re-assessed.

You will not be able to apply for NS JSA as you are off sick.

I would advise you to contact your local Welfare Rights Organisation; advicelocal.uk

Hi BH9983

Depending on your circumstances, yes you can, especially if you need help with housing costs.

I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation before applying for UC: advicelocal.uk
