Do UC make a decision on papers alone for UC claim?

I know this request can be made for PIP via a health professional stating it will be psychologically distressing. PIP assessed on the papers for my daughter.

Is it the same process for UC?

I have made my daughter a GP appointment to ask them to request this, but then realised I am not sure yet if it is the UC process... Unfortunately we have to wait 3 weeks for the appointment so no Fit Note will be issued till then...hence a delay with the claim.

I am just beginning and have not yet started reading the UC Guide, that is a job for the next few weeks.

Thank you.

Hi Kaitlin,

If I am understanding you correct, you're wanting to know about the UC assessment?
I had my PIP and UC both done by telephone by a health professional, and although the questions slightly differed, they were a very similar and time consuming process. I have had a fitnote in with DWP for 10 months now, and it didn't affect them wanting to call me still for an assessment. I was placed in the LCW group for a 2nd time, but have contested it due to my various conditions, and since December 2022 the processes I have had are:- my telephone call with a health professional, which then I was placed in the LCW group by response of a letter in my journal. I contacted my work coach for a Mandatory Reconsideration and explained the reasons why I believed I was placed in the incorrect group. I was declined yet again within a month, so now I am at the stage of a tribunal with the courts, which has been like this since end of June. The DWP have yet to respond to them, so I've heard nothing yet.

Hopefully my experience will help answer your questions.

Regards, Chris.

Thanks Chris
Yes it relates to UC.
So she might hear within a few months which would make it sooner than I imagined. Or maybe I am getting confused with the PIP timeframes.

Still not sure if the UC process will give an outcome based on the papers alone due to her difficulty in talking to them (like PIP did for her). She won't be able to speak to them. With PIP there is a clause about outcomes for certain conditions not depending on an interview. Is UC the same?

Whilst her situation is not documented via the fit note process, she has been impaired for the last 7 years for education and work and cannot access either. All medically documented.

Your situation sounds very stressful. Really sorry you are having to go through this. I hope you get a good outcome with backpay owed to you.

I made my daughter's claim for UC, nobody has seen or spoke to dd from DWP. I explained on the online claim that I was her appointee for PIP and she wouldn't be able to claim herself. The GP sent a sick note the day before I claimed again they didn't see her I did an econsult explaining I needed it to claim UC.
Someone from DWP visited to see d's ID and to make me appointee for UC. They didn't see d as she can't cope with strangers in our home. I've maintained her claim through the journal, taken phone calls and most recently took the health assessment phone call for work capability. It has been pretty painless and everyone has been very accommodating.

Your situation sounds similar. Very helpful to know. My daughter will also not see visitors at home.

I am appointee for daughter's PIP. I wonder if I will i have to re-do it for UC. I assumed it would be all DWP benefits for my daughter.

I have added problem that since i was made her appointee for DLA many years ago, since then I have had a serious health condition myself that compromises my ability to have long question and answer formal conversations. How long did the UC assessment conversations with you last?
I am hoping it won't be too long and too onerous and I can do it. I was hoping the paperwork trail would and our application (when it is done) will be self-explanatory about how she is affected.

Just to add, I also asked the GP for a fit note and asked them to say she cannot have an interview. i did not mention i am her appointee. They contacted me and asked her to make an appointment relating to the fit note.
