I have had drug and alcohol problems which lead to a stay in rehab in 2021. I have been clean and sober now for 2 years at the end of this month.
Will this go against me if I mention it on my esa50? I know it's considered a medical condition by some professionals, but others can be judgemental. I don't want to go into all the reasons with the DWP for my addiction as it is too traumatising and also very private. Would it be better not to mention it on the form?
One of my health professionals is very concerned that the pressure i'm being put under to go back to work could push me back into addiction and the life that went with it, and wants to put that in her letter. Again is this a good idea or not?
Only you can decide what to do here. It certainly shouldn't be held against you, and nor do you have to discuss what led to your addiction. Your health professional has expressed concern and wants to put it in their letter. You don't have to submit the letter, but if you don't and they are right about the possible impact on you from the pressure to work - all the work you have done to get to where you are now could be undone. People cannot help if they are not aware of what has happened.
But this is your choice and only you can decide. You have to do what feels right for you.
