Nickname: Barry |
Age: 61 |
Main health condition: Physical health |
Main conditions that affect daily living: Sudden onset of severe back pain and sciatica that has led to long-term mobility issues and significant daily pain. |
Rate of PIP daily living component: Standard |
4 point descriptor score: No |
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: Not likely . Until two years ago, I was perfectly healthy and had never needed benefits. I didn’t understand what others went through. Now, my disability affects me every day, but I don’t think I score 4 points in any of the new descriptors. |
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: I can no longer do basic tasks without feeling exhausted or in pain. I can’t stand for more than 10 minutes, walk more than a short distance without pain, and often have to sit down during simple tasks. I need help with bending, lifting, and even getting dressed at times. It’s hard to accept that I can’t do the things I once took for granted. |
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: I’d lose around £250 a month, but more importantly, I would lose the support I need for things like mobility aids and help with getting around. I’ve never been in this position before needing help but now I see how vital that support is. I would struggle to pay for transport, access healthcare, or maintain a decent quality of life without it. |
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: Before my disability, I was healthy and active. I worked all my life and never imagined that one day I’d be in a position where I’d need benefits. I didn’t understand what it was like for people with disabilities until it happened to me. I would never have guessed how much someone’s quality of life is affected when a disability makes everyday tasks so hard. I know people often think that others are just faking it or making it up, or as the government put it taking the Mickey, but now I understand that isn’t the case. In fact the way I look at it is the only people taking the Mickey is the government. I have paid into the system all of my life and the very second I need it they take it away. It’s wrong very, very wrong. |
Anything else to tell us: These changes would hit people like me the hardest. The government is pushing people back into work without understanding the real struggles of living with a disability. They haven’t taken into account how debilitating conditions like mine can be, even if I look fine on the outside some days. If I lose PIP, I lose my independence. It’s not just a benefit it’s what keeps me from becoming completely isolated. |
