Nickname: Emma |
Age: 25-35 |
Main health condition: Mental health |
Main conditions that affect daily living: Temporal lobe epilepsy with dissociative seizures, memory issues, and postictal aggression. |
Rate of PIP daily living component: Standard |
4 point descriptor score: No |
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: Very unlikely. My seizures don’t happen daily and I “look fine” between them, so I’m always judged on the good moments. I don’t think anything I deal with scores 4 on paper. |
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: I forget basic tasks and burn food. I’ve left doors open without realising and sometimes come around after a seizure confused and shouting. I’ve hit people without knowing I was doing it. I rely on someone to prompt me through the day and to keep me safe when I zone out. |
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: I’d lose £300–£400 a month. That pays for alarms, taxi travel (since I can’t drive), and someone to be around when I’m unwell. Without it, I’d be on my own with a condition that makes me a danger to myself and others. The stress could trigger more seizures. |
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: I can’t work. I’ve tried, but I’ve had seizures at work and been sent home. I once had a dissociative episode in a public toilet and scared someone. I’m not safe unsupervised for long periods. No job coach or plan is going to change the fact that I black out and can become aggressive without warning |
Anything else to tell us: At my last PIP assessment, the assessor said I “looked alert” and “answered clearly,” but I was in a shutdown and barely processing what was being said. She left out everything I told her about memory loss and seizures. They only see 30 minutes of me not the danger I become when I’m unwell. If I lose PIP, I lose everything that keeps me and others safe. I am actually very scared for the proposed changes. I know from previous jobs that I’ve ended up having to have risk assessments done they mitigate the risk by getting rid of the problem in other words as soon as I am a problem to them or the safety of others they get rid of me. |
