Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: Sleep is a real problem and I rarely get a proper, restful, good night. Therefore, as a result I wake up foggy headed and struggle to get going and mornings are a write off as it takes me hours to feel normal and be able to move properly. I use crutches to mobilise and am in pain 24/7. I use a tens machine and medication to see me through but I can’t be on my feet too long or sit in one position too long as it is too much for me. I can’t sit at a desk and use a laptop/desktop for too long anymore as I am awaiting surgical assessment for cubital tunnel and carpal tunnel syndrome which causes problems with my hands. I suffer with partial urinary retention which means I often need to use the loo more frequently than others as I can’t fully void my bladder so feel like I need to go more often. I work part time and love my job and would love to work full time but I would be an unreliable employee because I would be ill a lot and I have a lot of medical appointments I need to attend which would have to be during the day. At the moment I can make that work but if I was working full time, no employer would put up with the amount of absences I’d need and it would reflect badly on me. This would impact my mental health as I would feel like I was permanently failing. |
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: I would lose £290.60 every 4 weeks which would make a huge difference to me. I wouldn’t be able to afford fuel in the car to get myself to and from work and I wouldn’t be able to afford my fortnightly psychotherapy sessions which are a lifeline. Without this money it would have the opposite effect the government are trying to achieve as I wouldn’t be able to afford to get to work so my job would have to go, my mental health would deteriorate because I could no longer afford the vital support I pay for and this would then mean my physical health would decline further because my physical health problems are definitely impacted by my mental health problems. It would effectively make me less independent and more of a drain on the system than I am right now. |
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: I already work but only P/T. If they tried to force me to work F/T this would be an incredibly traumatic experience for me as I know I am not mentally strong enough to cope with the amount of rejection I would undoubtedly get and the feelings of failure this would bring up for me. This would make my mental health worse and could even lead to episodes of suicidal ideation. |
Anything else to tell us: I think the Government have got their approach all wrong. Instead of making cuts to those of us who are clearly doing our best to contribute to society by working as much as we can despite whatever disabilities/illnesses we face, they should be focusing on how to fix the broken NHS to make it work for us so the waiting lists many of us have been on for years are brought down so we are actually getting help for the problems we face. Some of the issues I have could have been fixed by now if the NHS worked the way it used to work for us. Everything is a battle to get even a basic level of care these days and delays in people’s diagnosis and treatment definitely have a huge impact on the rising number of claimants we have seen in recent years. You don’t have to be a genius to work that out! Many of us would love to work more hours or at all if they don’t already, but because everything in our country is so broken it has become impossible. |
