Nickname: Izzy P
Age: 55-60
Main health condition: Both physical and mental health
Main conditions that affect daily living: I suffer from osteoarthritis in a number of joints and long term vertigo. I experience chronic pain and have mobility issues.
Rate of PIP daily living component: Standard
4 point descriptor score: No
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: I am hopeful that I will score more than 4 points at my next review as my condition has worsened since my last assessment. However I feel I should have been awarded 4 points in a couple or more areas when I was awarded PIP but could not face appealing as I found the process to exhausting and traumatic.
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: I am unable to do any of the cooking and preparing a meal due to pain, fatigue and serious issues with balance and cognitive function due to vertigo. I only scored 2 points last time as they said I could use a microwave. I am not safe in the kitchen to undertake these tasks. I have problems with both washing and bathing and dressing and again these are activities that they only gave me 2 points for each one. I need assistance not just an aid which is what they said I needed. The most degrading issue is the assistance I need with toileting and this most definitely should be more than 2 points but again this is all I was awarded.
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: I would lose £5265 and my partner would lose £4332 in carers allowance per year. This would have a significant effect on my life. My partner gave his job up and took early retirement to care for me full time last year. We both only get a small works pension so this additional income has meant that my partner can care for me full time without working. If we lose this then he will have to go back out to work and my care support will be affected leaving me in a situation where I will suffer both physically, struggle with my toilet needs leaving me degraded and also will affect my mental health. It will also put me at greater risks of falling without anyone to support me due to vertigo.
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: I am unable to work and I have received my works pension on the grounds of ill health so work is out of the question due to my conditions.
Anything else to tell us: I was due to have a review last year and sent in the review form which detailed my deterioration and also provided medical evidence. I have received a letter saying my current award has been extended for another year. I have written and requested that I still have my review as I know I should be on the higher level. However I am not confident in the assessment process and don't feel they give you the correct points based on your needs. Many of us don't appeal and are made to feel grateful that we got something and don't want to rock the boat. These changes mean we are going to have to fight harder in the future to ensure our needs are met. My fear is that they will not review me and just keep extending my award until they take it off me. I hope they reconsider or make the assessment process fairer and actually give us the points that reflects our daily lives. An hours assessment is difficult to get across how we actually live our lives on a daily basis and the system is very flawed.
