Nickname: Bryn
Age: 59
Main health condition: Both physical and mental health
Main conditions that affect daily living: COPD, Cardiovascular issues, syncope, neurological issues, nerve damage, multiple lympomas in abdomen.
Rate of PIP daily living component: Enhanced
4 point descriptor score: No
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: 0
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: Balance when walking, numbness feet and fingers due to nerve damage. Syncope causes loss of vision temporarily, TIAs had several. Lympomas cause great pain bending or lifting, unable to put shoes, socks on etc and breathlessness with copd.
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: 1100+ per month as I would lose limited capability to work also. Also I'd have to pay the difference in my rent as LHA wouldn't cover the cost so I would need to pay £150 rent top up per month, council tax. I would be homeless as I couldn't afford the rent, my health would decline. I've worked from 17 to 58yrs of age and suffered a stroke so this is the first time I've ever claimed benefits. The UC claim process took a huge toll on my mental health also.
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: When I first claimed UC I could hardly walk after a stroke and still had to attend a jobcentre, I was clearly unwell. Demanded video calls and was passed from one work coach to another it was dreadful. Even threatened with sanction as I wasn't quick enough to pick my phone up, it only rang one ring! Poor communication, no compassion, they never even informed me of the limited work capability benefit my GP did. I would expect a work coach to not understand my medical conditions or difficulties, some of which are embarrassing. How would I at nearly 60yrs of age sit and try and explain to some youngster my disabilities, they are not medically trained and I would find it degrading. I wouldn't trust work coaches to care, it'll be another box service.
Anything else to tell us: Even now UC are not fit for purpose so I don't know how they are going to manage all this. This is going to cause deaths, poverty and homelessness. How many children will be made homeless, or people with disabilities how many will lose their jobs because they've lost pip which enables them to work. How many children will lose their school placements through homelessness, emergency accommodation etc. The government it appears are shoving responsibility onto local authorities, nhs, or social care services that are already broken. I'm absolutely terrified.
