Nickname: RNCBSHEF
Age: 56
Main health condition: Physical health
Main conditions that affect daily living: Congenital Rubella Syndrome, comprising of:
Severe Congenital Cataract
Congenital Nystagmus
Ocular hypertension
Severe sensiorneural hearing loss in both ears, profoundly so in the left ear
insulin dependent diabetes
registered as sight impaired/partially sighted
Rate of PIP daily living component: Standard
4 point descriptor score: No
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: Very remote
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: Hearing conversations in noisy environments - the hearing aid in the right ear does not assist much as hearing loss too great at high frequencies
inability to read signs at distances - need to use a monocular
mobility in that in crowded areas need to use a symbol cane (with is red and white to denote dual sensory loss)
difficulty in reading cooking instructions due to small print and need to use magnification on top of high prescription aphakic glasses (intraocular lenses were not prescribed, partly because much of the iris was removed)
very little depth perception so accidents (in bright sunlight) are more prevalent especially with uneven steps/pavements, not helped by cyclists thinking the pavement is a road
difficulty in getting blood onto a testing test for a diabetic meter
the need for extra lighting at home (and its cost)
the difficulty of keeping the rented flat clean and tidy
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: around £4000 per year. Moreover, given my age this is going to have a massive effect on when (or if) I can retire. Working is difficult, first in securing employment, secondly retaining employment and one can forget promotions.....I use a very large monitor screen which also has a magnification package. It would be impossible to do my job without it. this was courtesy of Access to Work.
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: I am one of the more fortunate ones in that I have been employed, pretty much continuously, for the past twenty three years but am not happy - see above.
Anything else to tell us: This will have a massive effect on my standard of living. In fact, I will barely survive given the costs of renting, council tax, bus fare (the concessionary bus fare only applies to buses after 9:30 am, not good for those who work!}, the every increasing cost of rail travel (even with a disabled person's railcard). I am not much above minimum wage (and resent it).
