Yes, there is still access to the Motability Scheme under Personal Independence Payment (PIP), if you are awarded the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP.
Under Disability Living Allowance, you had to be receiving the highest rate of the mobility component to be able to access the Motability Scheme. It is important to note that the rules to get the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP are different to the rules for DLA higher rate mobility.
For claimants with physical health problems, it is arguably harder to score the 12 points needed to secure enhanced rate mobility under PIP, as the walking distances linked to these points are shorter than those for DLA.
However, under PIP, someone could be awarded the enhanced rate mobility component for difficulties not related to physical health – for example, they may score all their mobility points for difficulties going out due to a mental, cognitive or sensory issue. In addition, points from the two PIP mobility activities can be combined, so someone with more moderate physical difficulties but who also has mental, cognitive or sensory issues, might score the required points to be able to access the Motability Scheme.
