There are two stages to claiming PIP:
- Completing the PIP1 form to start your claim
- Completing the PIP2 form to tell PIP how your disability or health problem affects you
There are three ways in which you can start a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claim.
Online
In some areas of the UK (not Northern Ireland), it is possible to start the claim process online. There is no central list of which areas are currently part of this service and new areas are gradually being added. You can find out if your postcode is included by following the prompts here: https://www.apply-for-pip.dwp.gov.uk/eligibility/check-if-eligible
By starting your claim online, you are providing the information requested on the PIP1 form. This means you will be asked for information like:
- contact details and date of birth
- National Insurance number
- bank or building society details
- doctor’s or health worker’s name
- details of any time you’ve spent abroad, or in a care home, hospital or prison
You will then receive either an electronic or paper PIP2 form to complete.
Phone
If you live in an area where you cannot start your claim online, you will need to call the PIP claim line number and have the same information available as listed above. Unfortunately, it can take quite some time to get through to PIP by telephone. Someone else can call on your behalf, but you’ll need to be with them when they call.
The member of staff at PIP will complete the PIP1 form for you. They will then either post out a paper PIP2 form to you or offer you the opportunity to receive the form electronically by email. If you choose the electronic form, you will then receive a link to the form.

Post
If you are unable to claim online or by telephone, you can also write to PIP and ask to start a PIP claim. This would mean that PIP will then send you a PIP1 form to complete and return containing some basic information. Once this is received, they will send you a PIP2 form to complete. Requesting claim forms by post is much slower and may delay the decision on your claim.
