Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

I called up the 0800 169 0310 change of circumstances line 12 times this morning from 8am until 9am, every time I finished the automated security questions it would ring off and cancel call. I have again called up the same number this afternoon at 13.50pm and got through all the security questions and have been on hold ever since. It's now 15.05pm and i'm still on hold!!!!!!

Been holding for 50 minutes. Not looking like I'm getting to speak to anyone today as, last time, when it got to 59.59 it cut me off. Ridiculous! No wonder there are more security guards than staff in your offices these days.

Got a compliance interview. It was about my part time course of which I recieve £0... which I already told the ESA about 2 years ago. But was told I must now tell them again. Which would be great if I wasn't stuck on an endless loop for more than 1 hour at this point. Kinda makes it difficult to comply with the compliance officer when you can't get through.

@Kate Absolute nightmare, what the hell is going on with them?! I could understand not receiving it yesterday as the bank holiday was done at such short notice but I expected to have the payment by today. Surely they could at least answer their phones or release a statement so we all know where we’re at…

Last week, the DWP confirmed that payments due on Monday, September 19 would instead be paid on Friday, September 16. It has now advised that payments due on Tuesday, 20 and Wednesday 21 will be made as normal, however, the money may not go in at the usual paying in time, but it will be paid at some point during the day.

DWP said: “People due payments and credits on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 September will also be paid as normal, but throughout the day of their expected payment date. There is no need to call us to check, as payments will be made. We advise people to check their accounts later in the day.”

I have been trying to call ESA this morning. I get through to the part where the robot asks my details and then get a busy tone and then disconnected. This is my 8th attempt. Can anyone advise me, I haven't had a payment today and I'm concerned as I don't have any funds.

My money hasn't gone through and i'm panicking. I have to buy special cat food, cat litter and bills etc.... I need that money today! I just called and there was an automated message saying any late payments may be received at any time today, please keep checking your account. That's not really good enough because I need to know for sure it hasn't been stopped. They did it to me before, so i have major trust issues with them. Anyone else waiting for 20th Tuesday 2022 payments?

I can't get through. After giving all my details, I get an engaged tone and then get cut off!😡

Trying to call and can’t speak with anyone, didn’t get my ESA payment, I wonder if it’s an error the services are having this week.
