Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

Been on phone for over 50 mins and still no answer.
Wouldn't it be easier to answer then less people waiting so long to give information or get an answer

@Cw I'm not surprised. I hope you've found a way.... we're all having problems with the phone system not working. They must be aware of this

I received a text from DWP for my ESA asking me to call them STRAIGHT AWAY on 08001690310 allegedly for a possible change of address. I never changed address nor I will do this panicked me. I am disabled with serious mental health issues but I was left in harmful distress for two days now, as I cannot get through to them. I tried several times and after replying to the automatic initial identification questions I’ve been put on hold each time for over 40 minutes after which the line cuts, or the automatic voice thanks me and tells me to hang up. I had to rely on sedatives as I’m scared not getting through may affect my benefits which I rely on. It’s so unfair. They clearly are in error thinking I’m changing my address but they put the burden on me to call back straight away when it’s impossible to get through. I’ll be trying again and again not sure how else to get in contact with them

What a joke, trying to claim jobseekers allowance but being denied. Didn't earn much but paid full NI. When I speak to anyone they cant tell me what the threshold is. Last time I called they said 'Google it'.

PIP helpline number 0800 121 4433 is abysmal.  I’ve held on the longest without success/being answered for 1 hour 40 minutes and on average 50 minutes, and phoned twice a day for two weeks, but had to give myself a break for a couple of days as it made me feel sick and anxious. Why can’t they get more staff? 😑😩😢  Is it the one off disability payment making more people phone up?  I’ve made 30 calls approx in the last two weeks.  I’ve also been cut off several times after holding for 5 mins.  Can you email them or write but I guess that would take months for a reply?  ESA DWP

I have tried numerous times and days to contact on 0800 169 0310 re ESA, each time spending 5 minutes on security questions followed by 8 minutes on hold only to be cut off every time!

I've been trying to get through to the Job Centre for 2 days now - 18 attempts so far, and every time I get hung up on before I can even attempt to get through the automated explanation at the beginning!! Yesterday I'd get into the queue, but get cut off randomly after 8 minutes or so... Today I can't even get through to the 'say your date of birth' bit etc! I'm trying to tell them they don't have to pay me money anymore! Surely they'd WANT to know that information!!!!!!

With the PIP line I'd been on hold for about 50 mins, almost 15 mins past closing; it's not at all clear if there's any reason to stay on hold at that point...

Dreadful experience trying to get through to anyone! It seems both my husband and I were short-changed on our winter fuel allowance. We got £10 each that cannot be right? Can it? I thought it was £100. Can I check with anyone well not so far and I have tried for nearly 45 minutes! Does anything work anymore?

Pip helpline is awful. 1st time I rang it was over an hr on phone in queue to fi ally ask my question. I had a couple of follow up questions but he hung up after answering my query. I had to call bk but after pressing 1st option the line is all crackly and can't hear what the voice is saying.

When I call 08001690310 keeps ringing for around 40 mins then cut's you off. Have persistently called this number for hours on numerous days, but same thing. Did manage to get an answer once, about 5 weeks ago now and was told would respond to my query in around 2-3 weeks, still waiting and don't hold out much hope of getting a response from them. Been trying this number again for past week, is so stressful.

Finally got through after nearly an hour. I would really like to thank the lovely guy we spoke to today. You could tell he was genuine and empathised with us about my husbands review. His condition has worsened to the point where he has had multiple repair surgery’s done and now recovering from cancer but he has been put on the list to be assessed! We have supplied consultant reports too. He was disgusted and has even added a note to my husbands notes. Thank you so much

The ESA is a complete joke, unable to get through on the phone after receiving a letter from them saying that if I don't contact them 4 days BEFORE the letter was sent my benefit would stop because my 6 month sick note, that actually expires on 17/01/2023, expires on 17/09/2022.

PIP it took me an hour and a half and even then you can't get to speak to an advisor  or someone that can check up on your claim so basically a waste of time as they can't tell you anything it's the same old party line of they're  really busy and basically you will just have to wait that doesn't  help at all
