Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

Currently on phone for now 1 hour 38 mins I called esa this morning at 8 because the idiots messed up my payment which wasn't received because apparently sending out letters to say I'm get a 10% increase screws up payments I was told they would manually sort the payment and after its signed off by a team leader I'd have money by 11am ...NOTHING I gave had £2 in my account for 3 days no food for 2 days my food delivery had to be cancelled because dwp had screwed up my payment by not sending it on the usual date. I'm now waiting to ask what's going on with my payment.  Its all very well writing in the comments but why doesn't someone actually go something about the horrendous unacceptable wait in queues on the phone...this country is becoming a joke

    08001214433 - PIP

Rang for the second time today, went through the options, then the usual wait, and wait, and wait..... and then finally cut off at 54mins 41secs without actually speaking to an actual advisor.

First time, at least I got through to someone, but still took 1hr 16mins before they picked up.

Just been trying to reach DWP re my ESA claim. 0800 169 0310. I was on hold for 65 minutes and when the phone was finally answered, the person on the other end couldn't hear me and then I was cut off. I have cancer and can't deal with this. I feel like screaming.

I have been trying to get through to income support on 0800 169 0310. But no one ever answers!!!!! It’s keeps me on hold. This is now my 3rd day of trying - I’m on hold right now as I’m writhing this.
They wrote to me asking for information but how I’m I suppose to give to them if they don’t pick up the phone- it’s ridiculous

Have been trying to reach PIP for 4 months. Have held a hundred times for 2.5 hours and then cut off. Now they cut you off after 20-30 minutes.
Can’t change my address and most importantly, am left without a vehicle because they haven’t sent letter confirming my claim is extended by a year due to the assessment backlogs and mobility requires that to allow you to have the mobility vehicle that I need to be able to leave my home.
    Truly atrocious.
