The Guardian reports that severely injured troops will be exempt from the medical assessment for personal independence payment (PIP), the disability benefit due to replace disability living allowance (DLA) next year. Benefit instead will be awarded to disabled troops based on medical tests applied by the military.

Troops with severe mental illness, those who are deaf or blind, or those who have lost both arms or both legs will only have to be assessed under the military medical test. A guaranteed disability payment of approximately £​130 per week will be paid to seriously injured troops.

In addition any disability benefits or war pensions paid to veterans will be disregarded as income when calculating entitlement to universal credit (UC).
