After a four year battle, the DWP have been forced to publish the names of 534 organisations which used forced claimant labour up until January 2012.{jcomments on}
After a hugely expensive legal fight by the DWP to try to keep the names secret, they were finally forced to reveal them by the Court of Appeal last week.
Claimants may be particularly disappointed by the number of charities featured on the list.
These include: Age Concern; Age UK; Care & Repair; Citizen Advice Bureau; Help the Aged; MIND; RNID; Salvation Army.
Big businesses include: Boots; Cash Convertors; DHL: Matalan; Morrisons; Pound Stretcher; Sainsburys; Superdrug; Tesco; WH Smith; Wilkinsons.
Mandatory Work Activity, the scheme involved, forced JSA claimants to work full-time in return for their benefits. It was announced in November of last year that the scheme was to end.
However, what is not known is which organisations joined after January 2012 and so do not appear on this list. We also don’t know how many of the companies involved continued to take part even after increased publicity made it very clear that claimants were forced to take part. Some, such as Tescos and Age UK, claim they pulled out after the scheme received very negative publicity.
Claimants are now waiting to see if the new Work and Health programme, which will replace the Work Programme and for which the DWP is currently inviting expressions of interest, will also include mandatory work.
