Many Benefits and Work readers know only too well the misery of spending day after day trying to get through to the DWP on the phone without success.

There’s more than enough evidence of this in the hundreds of comments below our articles on the subject:

Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?

0800 121 4433 PIP Enquiry Line

Earlier this month, one of our members contacted us in despair at her inability to communicate with the DWP .

Jane, (not her real name) a full-time carer had moved house and had tried for three solid months to phone the PIP enquiry line in order to inform them of their change of address.  As she put it, this was something DWP letters told them they must not fail to do ‘on pain of imprisonment’.

Jane made numerous attempts to get through on different days and at different times but without success.  She kept a record of all these attempts. She then sent a registered letter but received no response.

Jane was very concerned not only that she might be accused of failing to declare a change of circumstances, but also that any DWP mail sent to her old address would not be forwarded and their claim might be stopped.

We suggested to Jane that she contact her MP, pointing out just how unfair and distressing such treatment is and would they please contact the DWP themselves as Jane was unable to.

We are quite certain that MPs have their own hotline for the DWP and we know that contacts from MPs are generally treated seriously by the department.

Jane’s MP’s constituency office responded the same day, issuing her with a case number.

A week later, we got an email from Jane saying:

“I’m in shock ! The DWP complaints team have just got back to me and it’s all sorted now. I can’t tell you what a relief that is. I know there’s millions of people struggling with the system at the moment so I really appreciate this, and thank you for the suggestion. Good luck with your work, it’s so necessary.”

It really shouldn’t be so difficult to contact the DWP, especially when you there is a legal requirement for you to do so.

So, we’re suggesting that members consider following Jane’s example.  Keep records of your attempts to contact the DWP and, after you’ve made reasonable attempts to do so, ask your MP’s office to do it for you.

We know that most constituency offices are very busy places and that they deal with a  vast range of problems on behalf of people who are often close to despair.

But we think that the growing impossibility of contacting the DWP not only causes enormous stress and fear, but almost certainly leads to some people losing their benefits and possibly being threatened with legal action.

It’s not an issue that is the subject of campaigns by national charities and the DWP can no doubt produce highly dubious statistics showing how quickly most calls are answered.

So, it really is time that MPs were made aware of how big a problem this has become and that they need to do something about it.

So, if you can’t get through to the DWP, instead of it just being your problem, share it with your MP.

You can find out who your MP is here.

You can then either contact them via the form on the website or Google them to find their constituency office.

We know not all MPs offices will be helpful, so we’d really like to hear from you if you try, or have tried in the past, to get support from your MP in relation to benefits.

Was on hold for an hour & 20 minutes then got a message to say the service was unavailable & to call back.
Sent my son's form in August, was told in September they hadn't received it & would send out a new form, that didn't arrive! It's now November & still have no answers, no form & can't speak to anyone. So frustrating.

My MP has a history of “almost always voting in favour of reducing welfare benefits” so that’s not encouraging.
I received my PIP review paperwork at on 3/02/2023 and returned them on 10/02/2023 they acknowledged receipt on 28/02/2022 it’s not 30/10/2023 and I’ve still heard nothing. Since May I’ve been telephoning 3-5 times a week, every week and am on hold on loudspeaker for 30-60 minutes every time, or for as long as my brain and central nervous system can cope with the triggering music and repetitive messages.
A friend of mine put her papers in on 3/07/2023 and had a decision on 21/08/2023… a month!
    I’ve been waiting 9 months!!!
The system is broken, understaffed and over complicated.

I've been on hold for well over an hour twice today, I've had £1 in my account for nearly 2 weeks and lost my job due to serious mental health issues, I told them I was suicidal and their response is to starve me out and ignore me? List of reasons to continue is rapidly shortening

If anyone is still dealing with this. I spent the last two days waiting to get through to report a change of address, only to hear that they already have my new one from when I had updated my address online with HMRC. I still needed to get through for other reasons, but this could save you the pain of waiting for weeks on end to get through on the phone or to ensure they actually send your post to the right place.

I made a claim for PIP on 04/09/2023 and have never received the claim form that was sent to me.
I’ve now received a letter from the DWP stating that my claim will be cancelled if I don’t complete and return it.
I’ve been calling them every day to request for another form and have waited up to over a hour before the line goes dead.
I just don’t know what to do.

1 hour 35 minutes on hold to then have the phone out down on me because I told the advisor that being on hold such a length of time is unacceptable!!! I'm beyond livid right now.... do they think we all have nothing better to do? Ahhhh I'm so mad!!

I waited 20 mins and had enough of listening to the repetitive answer machine message. It's sad to read the comments here of the difficulties people have had trying to get through to someone.

No good with our MP. He's a total idiot and only works to line his own pockets. He promised so much and has delivered nothing. Waste of space. I'm currently on hold to DWP and have been for 50 minutes so far... It's never been less time when I've called. Inland revenue are no better.

My review came 1 year early, I received the paperwork on 20/8/22 which I completed and returned 22/8/23. On 26/8/23 a letter was sent out asking me why I had not returned my form? On 28/8/23 I received a text message asking why I had not returned my award form. Today 31/8/23 I received another letter date 26/8/23 asking why I had not returned my form. I have been on call waiting for 3 hrs now and still nothing other than that damn voice that thanks you for waiting. A whole afternoon of no pain meds so im not confused if they finally answer. This is not an easy process at the best of times but the contact with staff is just unacceptable. I will lose my benefit on 7/9/23 if they have not received my review application.

I spent in the last 6 days  31 hours and 12 minutes on a line with Dla child waiting to be connected to an agent . Only to ask if they even received my 5 year olds application ,as no confirmation been dome by them in any form in the last 5 weeks. Impossible to talk to someone . Hanging in the air with the worry they not received it and all our details are out there somewhere. Managed to talk with other departments there but regardless of impossibility to ask the right department they can not help or give any other nbr., email or mail contact to ask.

@Edina I'm in exactly the same situation with my son. I'm confident that the extension we are trying to get through to is not monitored. I have spoken to other departments and got through fine, not a thing on this extension and apparently it is the only team that can handle the enquiry. According to the process we should have recieved a message/text/email that they recieved the enquiry but I didn't receive anything

I’ve had non stop issues trying to get through to pip being now threatened with legal action I wish I’d found this page sooner I’ve contacted my mp after seeing this page and he has got in touch with dwp it really shouldn’t come to all this stress and upset he says he will up date me once he hears back surely there should be other ways and means to get in touch with pip as phoning them doesn’t work at all and it’s not fair on ppl trying and trying to update details who never get answered

I got a text to say ESA needed to speak to me.  Been trying to get through for 3 days without success.  Why can't they try ringing us if they need questions answering.  Very bad service.

This is so annoying, I don’t even get to sit in a queue! The number rings and then goes to engaged! How on earth are we supposed to let DWP know what we are legal obliged to tell them and can get fined for not doing so! Why oh why can’t there be a better system!

This is horrendous! Second call this week and again waiting 40 minutes + in the queue and not even knowing where I am in the queue or any indication of when anyone will answer. I also do not appreciate how the part of ‘we will answer your call as soon as possible’ has been removed from the automated person.
