Many Benefits and Work readers know only too well the misery of spending day after day trying to get through to the DWP on the phone without success.

There’s more than enough evidence of this in the hundreds of comments below our articles on the subject:

Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?

0800 121 4433 PIP Enquiry Line

Earlier this month, one of our members contacted us in despair at her inability to communicate with the DWP .

Jane, (not her real name) a full-time carer had moved house and had tried for three solid months to phone the PIP enquiry line in order to inform them of their change of address.  As she put it, this was something DWP letters told them they must not fail to do ‘on pain of imprisonment’.

Jane made numerous attempts to get through on different days and at different times but without success.  She kept a record of all these attempts. She then sent a registered letter but received no response.

Jane was very concerned not only that she might be accused of failing to declare a change of circumstances, but also that any DWP mail sent to her old address would not be forwarded and their claim might be stopped.

We suggested to Jane that she contact her MP, pointing out just how unfair and distressing such treatment is and would they please contact the DWP themselves as Jane was unable to.

We are quite certain that MPs have their own hotline for the DWP and we know that contacts from MPs are generally treated seriously by the department.

Jane’s MP’s constituency office responded the same day, issuing her with a case number.

A week later, we got an email from Jane saying:

“I’m in shock ! The DWP complaints team have just got back to me and it’s all sorted now. I can’t tell you what a relief that is. I know there’s millions of people struggling with the system at the moment so I really appreciate this, and thank you for the suggestion. Good luck with your work, it’s so necessary.”

It really shouldn’t be so difficult to contact the DWP, especially when you there is a legal requirement for you to do so.

So, we’re suggesting that members consider following Jane’s example.  Keep records of your attempts to contact the DWP and, after you’ve made reasonable attempts to do so, ask your MP’s office to do it for you.

We know that most constituency offices are very busy places and that they deal with a  vast range of problems on behalf of people who are often close to despair.

But we think that the growing impossibility of contacting the DWP not only causes enormous stress and fear, but almost certainly leads to some people losing their benefits and possibly being threatened with legal action.

It’s not an issue that is the subject of campaigns by national charities and the DWP can no doubt produce highly dubious statistics showing how quickly most calls are answered.

So, it really is time that MPs were made aware of how big a problem this has become and that they need to do something about it.

So, if you can’t get through to the DWP, instead of it just being your problem, share it with your MP.

You can find out who your MP is here.

You can then either contact them via the form on the website or Google them to find their constituency office.

We know not all MPs offices will be helpful, so we’d really like to hear from you if you try, or have tried in the past, to get support from your MP in relation to benefits.

Today, 8 April, I wrote the following email to WORKPENCOM@parliament.uk:

    Good afternoon,

The PIP Enquiry Line is near impossible to connect to.

    Over the course of days/weeks, the calls either;

    (1) disconnect after several minutes
    (2) disconnect before automated verification prompts
    (3) disconnect after automated verification prompts
    (4) disconnect during time spent in queue after verification

I have found the process next to near impossible. I experienced similar issues in 2023.

    In respect of;

    Change of circumstances
You must contact the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) enquiry line if:

Your personal details change, for example

    Your name, address or doctor

The help you need or your condition changes

How can a person action what is legally required of them if they cannot make contact?

    This must be addressed.

My new circumstances are such, that I have been unable to contact the relevant team to state a PIP review form has not been received within the 2 week postal period, despite repeated unsuccessful attempts to the enquiry line.

The DWP notification SMS clearly states "If you have not received this in 2 weeks call us on 0800 121 4433."

Due to no telephone connectivity, I cannot move forward and the situation is stagnant.

[My email has been acknowledged. Doubtful it shall have any meaningful effect.]

Trying for 3 hours to get through to DWP on phone to report change in circumstance, this is totally unacceptable.  They are quick to judge when they say we’ve received overpayments but they don’t make it easy to contact them.

I have made 38 calls to PIP in the last 3 months and been on hold for a total of 46 hours, just to get a copy of my entitlement . I finally got through today after another 56 minutes wait.

I've been on long term sick, recently going onto half pay. I've been receiving ESA to make up my wages, but last week left work through retirement through ill health. I've spent everyday trying to contact DWP to end my ESA claim, but it's an impossibility to get through to let anyone know. I may be cynical, but I don't trust the benefits system one iota, knowing this will come back on me as fraudulently claiming. What am I supposed to do about it? It's a joke.

I was on hold for 50 minutes to ESA, only to speak to an advisor who appeared to be completely clueless and spoke  to me in DWP jargon. A complete waste of an hour of my life

@M H Totally get where you're coming from, yesterday 1 hour 22 mins, to get told he couldn't add my information  to my records, even though the letter clearly stated I could ring them or fill the form in, a waste of time ringing them as the man I spoke to was completely clueless and unhelpful, reduced me to tears, fobbed me off by saying he'd get someone to ring me, I doubt very much that will happen

@Chloe Same happened to me, I estimate I have listened to that voice message and ghastly music for 3 hours today! I got cut off on 5 occasions and at 5pm I gave up.

I have phoned the Access to work helpline 9 times over 2 times, and been cut off everytime. Have waited over a month to get paid, and it should be after 10 days. I am trying to feed my children. :( Luckily I have a credit card.

@Gh So we're just expected to pay out and then claim back. But what if we don't have the possibility of buying it all first?!

Im on day 3 of trying to call for both ESA and PIPs, It is NOT possible to contact them, I don't know what to do. All i need is to inform them of a bank account change. I shall send recorded delivery letters to the addresses on the top of their letters, it's all i can do.

I send my dla child form off 8 weeks ago. Haven't had any confirmation they via text nor letter to say they have received the claim. Have tried to call numerous times on hold for more than an hour each time to either be hung up on as soon as they answer or not get through at all. Online it says you should hear back with some form of confirmation of receipt of claim within two weeks
Is anyone else experiencing this ?

@Kat I don’t know if you managed to get through in the end but I sent mine off middle of September. They are saying it’s taking 18 weeks to process claims at the moment. I’m on week 17 and still not been processed. Hopefully it won’t be too long for you. If you know the date they are taking the claim from maybe work out when 18 weeks will be and hopefully it should be before or at least on the 18 week mark! Good luck

@Safs Hi, I sent my daughters off in September, got a letter saying they’d received it 2 weeks after I’d sent it! Then had a couple texts to say they haven’t made a decision yet! I’ve now been waiting 12 weeks! Tried to get through many times, gets to an hour and half  and I’m cut off!

I just waited on the phone for ages and finally got an answer. I was calling to cancel dad’s Attendance Allowance. The chap asked for his NI number and just before I could give it, I got cut off. I assumed it was by accident and awaited for them to call me back rather than me calling and going through that long wait all over again. But they didn’t even bother to call me back. I won’t stress. So long as I can show my attempts on my phone.

I have been on hold for ESA for an hour and 18 minutes. It is now 5.06 pm and I know I will be cut off. This is unacceptable and I also need to speak about my son's PIP which is another number. I need to put aside whole days to make a telephone call. People with disabilities need help and this is definitely not helping!

Completely impossible to get through. Whatever option you press on the call cuts off after a few minutes. This is exhausting. As someone with a disability and cognitive issues, this is so draining.

On my 3rd day of trying the 0800 1690310.
Needing to update circumstances to avoid any overpayment.
2 phone calls yesterday dropped after 1hr 30mins ish. Same the first day.
I can't actually believe they're making this so impossible, my head could explode with the amount of times I've heard "thanks for waiting blah blah.
Aware we have mental health conditions yet expected to spend hours on the phone...anxiety through the roof.

Been in hold now.dor 1hr 15mins 16 seconds and still waiting! Dwp should be ashamed of themselves.  They  ignore us and don't help, yet as soon as they make an overpayment they hit us with a tonne of bricks. They need to sort themselves out! It's sickening. The poor stay sick and poor because the government treat us like peasants. As long as they get their bonuses and taxes we can stay in the gutters and die
