Scottish police have confirmed that they are considering launching a criminal investigation into the failure by Iain Duncan Smith and Chris Grayling to act on a coroner’s warning about flaws in the work capability assessment (WCA) that may have led to many claimant deaths.{jcomments on}
John McArdle, one of the founders of the Black Triangle campaigning group, has reported the two former ministers to the police for the Scottish offence of misconduct in public office because they failed to act on the concerns raised by the coroner about the death of Stephen Carre.
Instead of looking at the failings in the WCA outlined by the corner, they ignored the warnings and pushed ahead with the mass reassessment of long-term incapacity benefit claimants.
Scottish police have confirmed that they have received a complaint from a member of the public and added:
“The individual who made the complaint has been spoken to and we are awaiting further information to assess this matter and establish what actions are required.”
McArdle’s MP, Tommy Sheppard, has asked the chief constable of Police Scotland to keep him informed of progress.
