David Freud, the minister for welfare reform, is to retire this month with “full confidence in the future of universal credit.” He is unlikely to be missed by sick and disabled claimants.{jcomments on}
Freud is a former investment banker, who was taken on by Tony Blair in 2010 to work on welfare reform before defecting to the Tories to cover the same issues.
He will be remembered by claimants for his proud boast that he knew very little about benefits along with his suggestion in 2014 that some disabled people were not worth paying the minimum wage.
Lord Freud’s replacement has yet to be announced,
