The success rate for both new disability living allowance (DLA) claims and new employment and support allowance (ESA) claims is now well below 50% according to figures given by employment secretary Chris Grayling in a parliamentary written answer last month.
Grayling quoted DWP figures which show that between April 2010 and March 2011, out of 453,000 new DLA claims 257,000 were rejected. This means that just 43% of claims resulted in any award at all. In many cases the award may have been less than the claimant believed they were eligible for.
In relation to ESA, between June 2010 and May 2011 out of 447,500 new claimants who underwent a work capability assessment 265,000 were found fit for work. This means that just 41% of those who had a WCA were awarded ESA at either rate. This figure doesn’t include incapacity benefit to EA transfers.
